Now Hall of Famers, Adam Park (Xela Communications) and Doug Stephenson (Vision Telecom), were recognized as outstanding agents and they were awarded the coveted MetTel Green Blazer. PHOENIX and NEW YORK, Feb. 7, 2019 /PRNewswire/ -- The city of Phoenix entered into an agreement for MetTel, a communications and digital transformation leader, to provide services with fleet management automation technology which began in July.
Using MetTel’s IoT Fleet Management technology, the City of Phoenix is enabling its Public Works and Water departments to deliver more efficient, cost-effective and safer water resources and waste services to residents and facilities to help meet the city’s goal of zero waste by 2050.
The contract calls for MetTel to provide automated vehicle location services, such as advanced location-based services, dispatch automation and monitoring vehicle diagnostics and driver safety data for advanced business decisions as well as other operations support efficiencies and processes. The project will initially focus on telematics hardware and software solutions for tracking vehicles and obtaining essential data for maintenance, routing and customer inquiries for the Phoenix Public Works and Water departments. MetTel will be responsible for collecting and maintaining data required for the continuity of operations for thousands of city vehicles.
Another major transformation focus for the city is to enable more efficient, cost-effective and safe delivery of all-important water resources to residents and facilities. MetTel's IoT Fleet Management technology connects the Water Department vehicles. By connecting and gaining visibility into the mobile workforce information, the city is able to combine real-time information with current business intelligence systems to derive insights on their operations. I’m happy to report that for the first time and by popular demand, we’ve held two MetTel Innovation Summits in a year! This latest one, on our home turf, was the largest, with 35 enterprise CIOs participating from major brands such as Johnson & Johnson, FIS, USDA, RWJ Barnabas, AXA Financial, DTE Energy, Titan America, Main Street Bank, Fortress among others. We also had a great set of partners on hand, including our first official Summit sponsor, Samsung, who had a wonderful surprise in store for our guests. More on that later.
Theme: DX Masters
Similar to our last Summit in Palm Springs, we had an informative agenda focused on Digital Transformation (DX) and three key aspects that MetTel plays into: Intelligence, Connectivity and Security. DX is in the early stages of a multi-year cycle that will eventually completely change the way we do business, making businesses more nimble, flexible and capable of meeting any market opportunity or threat. Essentially, DX allows even established companies to become disrupters, instead of the disrupted. In the words of the hockey great Wayne Gretsky, “Great players always skate to where the puck IS GOING, not to where it’s been or even IS” – and that epitomizes our ability to predict the market and industry trends and most importantly, our customers’ needs before they know themselves. That has helped to make MetTel one of the industry recognized leaders in Telecom and Technology since our inception 22 years ago and will continue to be as a guiding principle for the future.
Digital transformation is a massive technical and economic trend. By the end of 2019, DX spending will reach $1.7 trillion worldwide, a 42% increase from 2017. According IDC, the majority of companies will transform to digital businesses between this year and 2020. However, this is hard work. According to our favorite DX expert – and one of Summit keynote speakers, Shawn Fitzgerald of IDC – only about 1/3 of businesses today are actually moving ahead successfully with DX. That leaves 2/3, the vast majority of business organizations, that are “digitally disabled,” in that they don’t have a real strategy or have institutional obstacles or cultural resistance to change. And when we asked those in the room what the biggest barrier to transformation is, 50% said “time to value” or how long it would take to show that the investments in DX are paying off….the pain before the gain, is another way to put it. 38% said “Proving the business case” that it’s all worth it is the second biggest challenge. Cost surprisingly, by itself, was not much of an obstacle, with only 4%. This shows IT leaders know they need to transform and are willing to pay for it. They just have to convince senior management and show return on investment while they are on the journey to transformation.
Trend: AI
In October, Gartner released their Top 10 Strategic Technology Trends for 2019 and for the second year in a row, AI represented the top 3 trends. In fact, under the overall banner of Digital Transformation, Gartner said artificial intelligence (AI) in the form of automated things and augmented intelligence is being used together with IoT, edge computing and digital twins to deliver highly integrated smart spaces. This combined effect of multiple trends is coalescing to produce new opportunities and drive new disruption….” So, think about all the trends in that statement – AI, IoT, edge computing, digital twins, smart spaces – the demand for AI is rocketing from $17.5 billion in 2017 to $46 billion in 2020 and the enterprise market for AI – ours – is growing 10 times as fast as the consumer market

By Max Silber, VP of Mobility, MetTelIt’s the vastness and applicability to every industry and market segment that makes it imperative to establish a technical baseline for all providers and customers. While the term was first coined in 1999, the market is still defining itself in these nascent stages. While we can see a day when connected devices and intelligent agents of all kinds will communicate and automate many of the transactions we perform manually in a constantly flowing stream of frictionless, digital algorithms, there’s a lot of work ahead to get there.
So how do we get started?
Think about the structure or DNA of IoT:
Devices or “Things” that ultimately receive and send messages across the Internet of ThingsNetwork as in “Internet” that provides the means to convey these intelligent communicationsApplications that enable and direct the work to be done across the IoT.
As in the overall IT industry, the majority of the value will be designed and delivered at the software application layer. Consequently, this is where most of the innovations and profits lie.
The underlying hardware, network hardware and devices – whether routers, sensors, servers, transmitters or personal devices, while necessary, will continuously commoditize with similar features in an endless but all too familiar race to the bottom of the market.
The real question or missing link here is a common standard to bring incompatible technologies together. Despite some recent activity by industry groups, a universal IoT standard has not been established. The challenge is that the definition of IoT varies widely from industry to industry. Automotive manufacturing robots don’t appear to have much in common with medical devices, for example.
IoT requires extensive technology to work —from wireless communications, to data security, to intercommunications with other devices. It’s challenging to apply a single standard to a device much less the integration of the entire IoT.
There are a number of technologies to potentially standardize on – everything from WiFi to Zigbee to LPWAN to Cellular.
But I will make the case for one that I think provides the most practical approach with the lowest barriers and fastest time to market: Long –term Evolution (LTE). Although LTE is the most prevalent wireless network option in the US today, providers are in the process of building out specific bands within LTE, to better service IoT devices. That means that new IoT devices can be on boarded to an LTE network, as quickly as they are developed and the new network would provide the device with less battery drain, by right sizing the bandwidth to what is more commonly needed for IoT, versus a data hungry smart phone for example. Current IoT network deployments include CAT1 and soon to be launched, CAT M1. Future developments in this space means that devices will keep becoming more economical to deploy and the traditional barriers of device certification will be less of a constraint to developers.
How can you apply this learning to your business environment?
A good homework assignment is to see where IoT can automate an existing process in your business cycle. Look at everything from inventory management, to how you handle re-orders. Surely it can’t be that innovation wasn’t important anymore to brands like Disney, Microsoft, Coca-Cola, or Adecco? The problem isn’t with the idea or concept behind an innovation lab, but rather the approach.Innovation labs have lately come under fire as marketing fluff, where the best and brightest teams were isolated in their hipster playground work spaces to come up with the coolest new thing associated with the latest tech craze like AI, whether it’s strategic or not.. The result: they spent money, they spun wheels, they hyped, but they didn’t really help the business.The problem with this approach is that every organization wants to be a technology company, regardless of their industry. They want the halo effect of developing the coolest cloud app or having the best DevOps platform. All too often, they don’t start with a business goal in mind other than just “to drive innovation.” Without a focus on a clear business objective or real market (read “customer”) insights, R&D is not grounded in the fundamentals of the marketplace.Further compounding this, the pace of change not only from technology disruption but also from M&A. The lines have blurred in our sector from mergers and acquisitions involving telcos, IT firms, media companies, cable operators and others such as AT&T and Time Warner to CenturyLink and Level 3, all the way to Google and WebPass. A lot of people aren’t even sure how to define telecommunications anymore and what it means to be a key player in the space.Considering MetTel just launched our Customer Innovation Labs, I wanted to give my thoughts on the matter and discuss the approach from our perspective. The goal is always going to map to a customer need and innovation should be a partnership. MetTel has spent the last 21 years servicing the telecommunications and IT network needs of companies of all sizes. Being a smaller provider without the legacy bulk of the big US carriers, we’ve been forced to innovate to develop creative and alternative methods of solving customer problems. Many of these work-arounds – like our Gartner-recognized SD-WAN configurations — are now industry best practices.We see companies across every vertical trying to make sense of the latest technologies and determine if it’s relevant to them. How do they know if it’s worth the resources? What other company systems and processes would it impact? What new technology products, services and skills do they need and how do they budget for it? The questions are endless.
This is really the crux of why MetTel Customer Innovation Labs was born. There’s a definite emphasis on the word “customer” for a reason. We decided that we needed a focused way to address these questions for our customers – innovating together for tailored solutions that provide business immediate value. We’ve pivoted our traditional business model from reactive trouble-shooting to focus more on being a strategic communications service provider and consulting partner to our customers. Given our technology-agnostic approach and the depth and breadth of our portfolio, we’re well positioned to educate our customers and help them make sense of the latest tech trends and how to navigate the cluttered, confusing and constantly changing IT infrastructure landscape that supports them.
Our lab personnel are on the front lines with our customers and there are always new questions popping up as technology continues moving ahead at light speed. So, we collected all of these questions from our customers – across healthcare, retail, energy, manufacturing and other industries – and knew that we could make tailored solutions based on collaboration and innovation since we don’t believe in a one-size-fits-all approach. The funny thing is this is how MetTel has been so successful – our approach has always been to put the customer first when advising and implementing the right solution. Our Customer Innovation Labs have really been operating within the company for several years now but we decided we’d officially give it a name – and for good reason!
MetTel Customer Innovation Labs are working on a number of solutions such as our emergency kit, which addresses sales spikes, mergers and acquisitions and unforeseen incidents like natural disasters that could impact a company’s networks. The Kit is an out-of-the-box solution that revives network functions instantaneously. Other projects we’re working on range from programmable telecom services to omni-channel contact centers, an expanding set of real solutions to real business challenges and opportunities.
At a time when technology innovation often distinguishes competitors from one another in every industry, it’s more important than ever to support R&D. But investment is only one part of the equation. Focusing R&D on……….wait for it — practical innovation — may make all the difference in supporting your business while ensuring your business (and customers) support you.

By: Max Silber, VP of Mobility, MetTelOver the past several years, the balance of power has shifted from the seller to the buyer as the digital consumer took to the Internet and took control of the transaction process. Armed with Apple’s iPhone, the first true consumer smartphone arriving in 2007, retail and other B to C industries were forever turned upside down. It wasn’t until a few years later, however, that that smartphone impact was felt in the corporate space.
For many years dating back to 1999, Research in Motion owned the corporate sector. Standard practice was for companies to issue Blackberries to executives and their mobile workers. However, as the iPhone gained traction on the consumer side, more and more enterprise workers began to demand or surreptitiously use their own smartphones for business, often in violation of company guidelines. As the demand grew, the BYOD or “Bring Your Own Device” to work concept was born.
The thought behind BYOD was to make employees happy by letting them use the device of their choice while saving the company the costs of purchasing and stocking company-owned smartphones. BYOD quickly reached critical mass in 2010 as CIOs felt those device cost pressures. Gartner forecast that by 2017, at least half of all US enterprises would deployed some type of BYOD program.
It seemed this trend would continue unabated. There was, however, a catch. Businesses began to realize how much control they were losing in BYOD — after all, they were employees’ smartphones – and maintaining company security and compliance standards were becoming challenges, particularly in the face of mounting cybercrime. As a result, the inevitable backlash occurred. Within MetTel’s customer base of several thousand organizations, more than half who have tried BYOD are returning to a corporate-owned policy, citing greater security, preservation of data and regulatory compliance as key motives, not to mention data plan cost controls and better employee productivity. And government organizations are the least likely to approve BYOD programs due to compliance mandates.
The Two-Minute Drill
While MetTel can help companies deal with this dilemma from both sides, we strongly advocate the corporate-owned approach as we can now have employer-issued iPhones 8, 8 Plus and soon X, fully provisioned and secured within minutes, just two, actually.
With MetTel’s unique Universal Device Enrollment Program and “two-minute drill,” any new or existing device is controlled from a single source that allows for efficient enrollment, restriction, deployment, and control through MetTel’s customized portal. One point of contact now manages all of the customer’s Tier 1 network providers. This means that over-taxed, under-resourced IT departments no longer have to reconfigure and enroll iPhones for each carrier network they need to connect to.
Device enrollment is done once on the MetTel network – automatically when the phone powers on – so the employee receives their new phone all prepped and ready to go with security and key business apps all pre-loaded. MetTel’s automated system configures and deploys all major backend systems – Apple DEP, Auto-enrollment, Active Directory, Microsoft Exchange, AirWatch, MobileIron, SOTI, MaaS360, to name a few. This automated process happens in two minutes –when the employee first powers on the phone.
MetTel’s Mobile Device Management (MDM) software locks down the device with market-leading security software while controlling roaming charges and blocking non-business content. MetTel’s MDM allows the client to geo fence — shut down or enable certain functionality in their devices depending on location — and whitelist certain applications and content. MDM administrators can remotely manage devices including wiping them clean to prevent proprietary data from being leaked in case the device is stolen or lost.
As an official Apple Authorized Carrier and Reseller, MetTel becomes one of only a handful of telecommunications carriers in the US to team up with Apple in the enterprise market. Last year, Apple announced its iPhones are used by one billion consumers worldwide, providing numerical evidence of iPhone’s widespread use. Now that the question of BYOD has been answered – in two minutes – and the concerns of enterprises over security, compliance and speed to productivity alleviated, no doubt the floodgates will open for business-issued iPhones. The latest craze is artificial intelligence (AI) and not long before that, businesses were excited by the potential of 5G. Everyone should be talking about the power of wireless connectivity and IoT to revolutionize industries. This is part of the digital transformation, which is a major focus for all industries. While moving to a software defined IT architecture and cloud environment is addressing major business challenges, rising adoption of IoT and wireless helps organizations implement changes easier, faster and with a new approach to connect disparate business solutions. (Yes, I am hearing the intro to Star Trek in my head as I re-read this.) History is proof that the tech world has a knack for thinking big and talking bigger.
It is verifiable that some things don’t get talked about enough. Sometimes in our zeal to bring the latest and greatest technology to market, the real business impact and/or specific business functions unintentionally get overlooked. This is especially true when there is no standardized manner or protocol yet in existence for these technologies. (Think 5G or IoT.)
The dirty secret to most industries are the things that happen behind the curtain. How does Amazon get you all those products the next day? Why do those ads within our Gmail accounts seem to reflect our preferences? How are companies that rely on factories and manufacturing facilities digitizing their businesses to stay ahead of the competition? The answer is most aren’t yet tapping into new technologies that can address this issue, but a select few are and now IoT offerings are resolving existing business challenges, like silos. IDC anticipates that IoT technologies will be materially affecting the way that all companies manage their supply chains by 2020—with estimations that the IoT market will reach $1.7 trillion.
Today we announced MetTel’s IoT Single SIM—the first of its kind that automatically connects to the strongest signal, ensuring the most bars available anywhere in the world. Now we can celebrate a new technology that is more than disruptive hype—it’s practical innovation. By the way, disruption sounds cool, if you’re the disrupter. For all those companies who need to throw out their current way of doing business and scrap all related investments, disruption can be well, very disruptive to business. Looking at that way, improving existing business flow can be transformative, if not as sexy as disruption—but a lot less painful.
IoT Single SIM helps answer a number of annoying, yet important questions: How do we get all of our “things” on the same network? How can we be sure of connectivity if our carrier isn’t represented in a specific area? How do we know if our supply chain is working to peak efficiency and where the bottlenecks are?
This is exciting because we are solving a very specific and crucial business need. We’re providing companies with real-time, always-on wireless connectivity, regardless of the device, network, equipment or carrier. We’re also allowing customers to tap into the IoT ecosystem, which ensures that we’re making the previously invisible, visible and making sure things that are connected stay that way!
So, why is this important and why you should care? As an example, lets look at supply chain management. This space has experienced more than a few challenges. By various perspectives, IoT can transform traditional supply chain management to achieve unprecedented efficiencies by automating and closely coordinating supply, stocking, shipping and everything in between, which largely removes the need for human intervention and potential for human error.
Some companies are effectively implementing wireless or IoT solutions to impact supply chain issues, according to an IDC report the impact of IoT on a company’s operations inevitably will vary. In one example, IDC predicts that by the end of 2018, digitally connected processes will drive 15 percent productivity improvements for manufacturing supply chains. Companies like Tyson, which uses IoT to connect to grocery stores and provide data and connection to customers, use it to ensure inventory is accurately stocked, shipped and tracked. DHL has implemented IoT technology to change the way it manages delivery, communicates with customers and provides business insight.
To add some more color to this, a recent survey by GT Nexus and Capgemini found that 70 percent of retail and manufacturing companies have already started a digital transformation project in their supply chain and logistics operations. Although, this isn’t as sexy as, let’s say, the next version of the iPhone, the backend technology really is because it’s dramatically changing the way enterprises do business—efficiently and cost-effectively. These digital transformations are overhauling a company’s ability to save operational costs (such as inventory, fuel costs for shipping, product recalls/errors, etc.) across the board. The conversions are providing visibility into functions previously working in disparate departments and often managed in isolation.
With IoT technologies, supply chains can put their focus on the customer because their systems are ‘talking’ to each other in real-time and leveraging a network of sensors that lets them know when to re-stock, ship, sell, and so on. The transformation allows a company provide faster, more accurate materials to customers. Simultaneously, company’s can connect to existing ERP solutions and access/analyze data like never before.
There are all kinds of powerful ERP, CRM, digital marketing and procurement solutions. Most companies have a mix of these solutions, but many are moving towards adding sensors, RFIDs and more technology. It is exciting to know that we’re solving a lot of the issue and angst that goes with these tools and solutions.
We’re now able to provide more capabilities, with a simpler solution and our IoT Single SIM is an example. We’re already experiencing tangible impacts from this technology.
In healthcare, we transformed an assisted living facility that had been struggling with it’s mobility issues for years. Within one week, we changed the way they added devices to networks, connected disparate teams and even changed the way residents were connecting with the staff.In consumer packaged goods, we’re working with a major packaged goods player that is able to track, stock and carry inventory in a way that’s providing significant cost savings.In energy, we’re seeing their outdated industry be able to offer new services, consolidate/rethink efficiencies, etc.
Regardless of your industry there is an inescapable truth. Companies must digitize to grow. The evolution and transformation doesn’t have to be disruptive and painful. When it comes to thinking of the latest and greatest technologies, sometimes it’s taking an older concept, applying new technology—like the IoT to revive it by making it new again. IoT is indeed a transformative agent. And Single SIM makes it practical and therefore, useful.

The company had to install phones through Nortel at each office site, pay for the switch, the engineer to come in and install the system, and for the phones.“Now,” Heimerl explains, “there isn’t such a big outlay of cost.” Working with MetTel saves Wunderlich, upon opening each new office, $35,000 upfront on hardware costs and an additional $800-900 per month.Best-of-Breed Partner One of the best parts of working with MetTel, according to Heimerl is that MetTel aggregates different LECs together on their network and manages the relationship. LEC refers to Local Exchange Carrier, meaning, the carrier that services a particular area.“With previous telecommunications providers, we could not get access to all the LECs we needed. MetTel on the other hand has strong carrier relations with Network to Network Interface (NNI) to all Tier 1 carriers and provided us circuits from all the carriers we needed,” states Heimerl.In addition to strong carrier relations, Heimerl describes Wunderlich’s relationship with MetTel as “best-of-breed,” as another great benefit of working with MetTel is having access to MetTel engineers. This “abnormal” personal relationship allows Wunderlich to scale quickly and economically, for instance, by cutting down on installation errors that would result if Wunderlich didn’t have direct access to MetTel’s knowledgeable engineers.Results:Installed a VoIP solution, creating a cost-effective way to open up small offices quickly and at a low cost, saving $35,000 upfront on hardware costs.Deployed and activated SD-WAN infrastructure in less than one week, providing increased functionality and reliable backup while still saving the company up to $900 per month.
